Soigné: Style in Second Life

A Guide to Second Life Fashion and Lifestyle

Cotton Candy Tart

Posted by Lucas Lameth on May 6, 2008

Only one outfit today! I’ve been shopping too much and having lots of fun putting together these style posts but I’ve been heavily neglecting my other Second Life projects. My shop therapy quickly evolved into indulge shopping. So at the end of my SL day I think I will focus on one outfit and evenly distribute my caffeine highs.

This outfit was again inspired by a shirt from H&V (Heart Attack & Vine). I love the colors and style. It reminded me of Wonder Bread. Or maybe a t-shirt a little boy in the 50’s would sport in a milk commercial, a Lassie show or Pleasantville. At first I wore shorts with the shirt but that was TOO boyish and I wanted to “man-up” the outfit but also keep the “I’m going to the Carnival, ta-la-la” look. — Yesterday a stranger AV hit on me in IM starting with, “Cute AV but how old are you? You look underage” but after I told him I was twenty-three he emote sighed in relief and continued his charm. Which was lame anyway.

I bought new boots from UBU (Urban Bomb Unit) again because they just happen to match my new shirt. I wanted to buy some high-lace boots of theirs but this was totally better even though I have the black skull version. Also picked up Noam Sprocket’s latest sex hair release. It took effort to mod it onto my fat head but alas it was a success! My awesome cute Watermelon Bag by Shunta Watanabe is from the Koreshan Bake Sale this past weekend. I sure hope its not discontinued because its so cute and hella stylish. Kiwi and Orange versions are also sold seperately. I snatched the Kiwi, too.

I wanted one of those big circle swirl hypnotic colored lollipops but I couldn’t find any in SL so I settled for this awesome sculpted free Cotton Candy from Rave Nation. I also found this neck star tattoo that that comes in all layers from Rave Nation (undershirt, shirt, jacket) and you gotta love that! I was able to keep my Aitui tattoo and wear the Star tat as a a shirt layer. Anyway, cheers!

Style Diary: Lucas Lameth

Three new looks today inspired by Heart Attack & Vine apparel. I followed a link by Phoenix Chapman of ‘Be Less Stupid’ blog loving the style and color palette of the clothes. While all women clothes were posted, I saw a particular shirt/vest combo I could potentially convert to male fashion. However to my valiant surprise H&V had a mysterious staircase leading down to a basement where it was filled with all sorts of trendy men’s clothes. Hah! I hate stores like this in Second Life because I become their devote loyal customer (their witty clothing names help, too). It makes me want to rip my Avatars clothing from my monitor and wear it myself in first life. However, fashioning yourself in Second Life can be a great way to experiment before you invest in real life price tags on your mission to style. — So on to my H&V love affair!

Look # 1 – Very skater chic. If I can say that without letting on my homo then so be it. H&V had a few graphic-t’s all of which I adore and will most likely find combos for. By the good graces of fashion all layers are included! (undershirt, shirt, jacket). I scrunched up my Armidi jeans and invested in the Maitreya Men Desert Boots. These are high quality boots every man should own. It comes with tied or untied lace options which is pretty neat. My hair is Taylor by ETD which is sold as a womans hair but its perfect for guys looking for long hair without looking girly.

Look # 2 – I’m a cardigan whore. So this H&V cardigan was a must have off the bat. The texturing is excellent and so are the sculpty scrunched sleeves. The two-button style make it more interesting and it comes stapled with a yellow/white shirt. I don’t mind when designers/content creators pre-set your clothing layers for you when they obviously have good taste. White sneakers have been a necessary fashion trend since I can remember and hasn’t ended yet. From prep to ghetto every good style-guy owns a good pair of white sneakers which they meticulously groom. Get them at DETOUR along with a variety of other sneakers for men (and women).

Look # 3 – Another cardigan from H&V. This one with hipster flavor. I paired it with a delicious bag from Xia Xevious. Made for women but I saw the bag as the perfect murse (man-purse). All you budding metrosexuals can get away with it. — My shoes are PornStar Slip-ons by UBU (Urban Bomb Unit). There are a lot of van-like slip-ons popping up in-world (Akeyo, Truth, Aitui, Shiny Things) and they are all fantastic but what makes UBU shoes stand out is their fabric/stitches/sole change on command to so many options and you can change one shoe if not both for extra flavor. Not to mention the excellent sculpty and texture work. Get them. You need them.

Style Diary

So I have a boot addiction. I saw these awesome rain boots on the fashion feed and decided I needed them no matter what. The boots were the inspiration for this outfit and everything just kind of worked along. I’d post pictures of me naked wearing just the boots but I’m not sure if that meets the fashion standard of this blog.

I bumped into one of my fashion clad male buddies who usually sports eccentric colorful wear like a good NY hipster. He was wearing ‘Random Industries’ brand by Garbage Prototype clothing and I fell in-love. I usually avoid Random like most photosource clothing but boy-oh-boy when style is concerned Random has it all packed down to the cheesecake. I spend a good dish of lindens there today but am most pleased to sport this striped-t with vest. It’s artsy-fartsy and super sexy which was exactly the look I was going for. The awesome tie, which apparently is decked with skulls just like my boots is from The Good Life. The high detailed cuffs are my favorites which I always whip out when Im feeling a bit hipster-grunge you can also find at The Good Life. And what a Good Life it is indeed.

There isnt a lot of hair that matches my new Laqroki skin and shape combo so I was pleased to find this simple artsy hairstyle from Truth. That man is whipping up quite an amazing batch of hair for men and women. I think the greater half of his store is now hair. Which means you should drop by and get a new do.

LAQROKI I was curious about the new Laqroki skins and I found a skin called Ethan I absolutely couldn’t take off. I usually wear Abyss, but that skin fad has created another clone era for ideal male AVs in Second Life. I was ecstatic at the selection at Laqroki but also the quality. Their previous work felt a little too photo-real but these skins have so many variety and ethnic flavor. The quality also feels like it went up a few notches or perhaps thats just me gushing over the new kin. Ethan had an Asian/Oriental feel and being Pacific Islander in real life I was instantly drawn to the look. I modified my shape a little and am pleased with the baby-faced result in combo with my new skin. So visit Laqroki and check out their skins. Maybe your new favorite skin will be an undiscovered Laqroki.

MUISM My tastes fall into more hand-painted clothing rather than photosourced clothing. I have always stayed away from Redgrave and Muism because of some very photosourced quality and high prices. Meanwhile handpainters, who Im confident work much harder, charge less. Today I was surprised to be seduced by Muism. I found these sculpty scarves that Ive been looking for in Second Life (and enjoy the style in real life) but also I found some great mens poses and a variety of mens bags. The one I chose today is an army style bag similar to a style I own IRL. So I had to have it. They have other great selections though and if you are a male fashion horse you must check it out. I love the Muism tank top which comes in many layers. My favorite tank is from Aitui but all of Aituis shirts and tanks are jacket layer which make them impossible to layer underneath button downs and jackets.

HOORENBEEK Amazing shoe store where you can get these hip new cowboy boots either in a new or used style in a few colors. A friend had told me about this store and ever since I have been obsessed. Their prices are also a bit high but their style and quality are absolutely unique. They make mens shoes that are up to date in-style IRL in SL. While hoorenbeek sells some apparel and accessories their main key item is their shoes. –There are a lot of great mens footwear out there already, but some are fantasy-like, flamboyant or very grunge. Other than hoorenbeek there are also great boots at Maitreya and City Walk/Formal shoes at Shiny Things.

Black Widow

 Black Widow Black Widow

The Black Widow Black Widow
Black Widow

Take one black swimsuit. Cover with a satin shrug, add billowing black sleeves and a sculptured cowl for volume. Top with a vintage black hat, add heavy gold jewellery. Sleek black footless tights optional. Serve chilled in stiletto heels.

Bijou’s new releases occasioned for a shift in my usual clothing routine. I rarely wear swimsuits unless for a photo shoot, and so I tend never to buy them. Kotobuki Jewell’s new Fabulous swimsuit, however, I thought merited a buy, and I found myself getting the fatpack for the coloured wrap tops (that come on separate shirt and jacket layers). Temptation got the better of me and I set out to have some fun with the swimsuit in black, which, for me, usually means more black, big shades, and a resulting outfit that I usually wish I hadn’t come up with, as I always end up looking kookily overdressed (my definition of fun is strange, I know). That’s what SL is for, though, isn’t it?

If the first outfit seems to bare a little too much belly, I’d suggest layering a sheer undershirt beneath the shirt and jacket layer. I’m afraid I’m not the best at pulling off colour, so I opted for a sheer grey jacket from Shir Dryke (shop coming soon), though the end result is far less dramatic than with just bare skin.

My only complaint on the Bijou swimsuits is that the bottom half has a noticeable seam along the navel, though it’s only obvious at a closer glance. The detailing on the gold ring buckle and the texturing isn’t bad at all, and at Bijou’s prices, I don’t regret buying the fatpack. I suspect it will be a challenge to mix these tops, though.

If you read all the way through this post, it’s time to reap the rewards – that is, if you’re fast enough. The first three posters to reply (with a complete sentence) will receive this unreleased black pearl and diamond cocktail ring from Muse in their choice of gold or silver, and will have it delivered to them as soon possible. Happy posting!

Optimising Windlight for Avatars 2.0

Posted by Caliah Lyon on April 10, 2008

Edited Jan 12, 2009 – With the release of Release Candidate 1.22 the avatar mesh has now been fixed so it shows as a default white rather than grey shade. This is the reason why clothing on avatars would be darker than the attachment prims even if they had the same texture. Once 1.22 goes live as the default client, using these settings, you should no longer need to tint prims or wear facelights! To allow for this brighter avatar mesh I’ve lowered two settings: Scene Gamma (now default at 1.00) and Ambient (now default at 0.64). All other settings are the same. I’ve also included in the tutorial how to set this automatically as your default lighting whenever you log on. – Caliah

Some of you may remember the old WL presets I made several versions back. As those are long obsolete, I’ve come up with a new preset which works on the current client based on one of the default midday settings. With this preset your avatar will look better with local lighting and atmospheric shaders  (no need to turn them off unless in a build full of local lights). It’s recommended to use a very faint face lamp or none at all in public (consider it as doing the public a service in that your face lamps won’t be blinding anyone else on WL!). Note that the lighting is uniform no matter which direction you’re facing. If you do opt to go without a face lamp you can raise the Ambient Intensity (I) value to compensate. I’ve set it to 0.64-0.70 here for the outdoors, but lower settings are recommended for builds with a lot of lighting.*

You can just download this preset here and place the file directly in C://Program Files/Secondlife/app_settings/windlight/skies or follow this guide to set it manually. NOTE: If you are using RC 1.22.xx it will save the preset to the C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings\windlight\skies directory. While the path is harder to remember this enables you to keep your settings across different installs of the SL client. Save it there if you prefer.

facelight nofacelight

Recommended Face Lamp (Versions 1.21.xx and below)

I’ve made two face lamps, one warm (with a slightly orange light) and one white. I’ve put a box in the Muse lobby that will give you the in-world version of this tutorial in a notecard that has the lamps and some helpful pictures.

Open World > Environment Settings > Environment Editor and click on Advanced Sky, then click on “New” and save under a filename you remember. I’ve named my preset OptimisedWL.

The Atmosphere Tab

This is largely to improve the quality of the horizon and has little bearing on the lighting itself, -except- for the Max Altitude, Density/Distance multiplier values. You can tweak the other settings to your satisfaction to get better skies.

atmosphere

Blue Horizon: R: 0.12, G: 0.12, B: 0.16, I: 0.16
Haze Horizon: 0.09
Blue Density: R: 0.32, G: 0.59, B: 1.00, I: 1:00
Haze Density: 0.65
Density Multiplier: 0.18
Distance Multiplier: 2.0
Max Altitude: 188

Lighting Tab

I’ve set Red and Green values slightly higher to give the light a warmer “sunlit’ tone, but you can make all RGB values equal for a whiter, more neutral light. If you want brighter light you can raise Ambient using the “I” (Intensity) slider. A range of 0.64-0.77 is recommended, combined with Scene Gamma of 1.00-1.22. Note that you may have to lower both Ambient and Scene Gamma if you regularly visit builds with a lot of local lights.

lighting

Sun/Moon Color: R, G, B and I at 0.086
Sun/Moon Position: 0.000
Ambient: R:0.64, G:0.64, B:0.63, I:0.67 or R: 0.70, G: 0.67, B: 0.66, I: 0.70 (second setting is brighter)
East Angle: 0.16
Sun Glow: Focus: 0.10 Size 1.75
Scene Gamma: 1.00-1.15
Star Brightness: 0.00

The Clouds Tab

The only difference with the clouds tab from any default preset you might have is the coverage. I’ve set it to low (exactly 0.13).

clouds
Cloud Coverage: 0.13

As always, you can fine-tune these settings to suit your particular preference 🙂 Press New and save it under a name you prefer.

Using This Setting As Your Default
If you want to dispense entirely with the day and night presets and have this setting on all the time, do the following:

Press the button marked Day Cycle Editor in the Advanced Sky Editor menu. This will give you a box where you can specify what preset to cycle through every three hours (keys).
windlighthowto
You don’t need this if you want this WL setting to be your default lighting all the time. To discard them press Delete Key several times until only one key remains.

windlighthowto2
When you have only one key left, click on the drop-down menu below Key Preset and choose the name of the Optimised WL setting you saved above (mine was CalWL3).

Press Save Test Day to save your changes. No more need to set this every time you log in!

Note – in most current WL settings old facelamps are much too bright; it would be best to have a friend check if yours is.

* Sadly nothing can be done about local lights if you go shopping and happen to pop into a build that’s full of them (apart from turning off atmospheric shaders), but a politely worded notecard to the designer or owner may help convince them to update their lighting methods.

My Valentine’s Day finds, and this week’s events

Sculpted Hat with Birds, free Valentine’s gift from Happy Mood.

While I’d recovered from the flu fairly recently, my periods of fatigue seem to have only increased (common, I’m told, after being ill). On top of which my beloved (and new) laser mouse decided to develop a bad case of drift, making it impossible to even rotate a large item I’d rezzed. I rely on this mouse’s sensitivity for finer control over my primwork, so you can imagine how much of a setback this is.

Fortunately, this past week, in which we’ve been quite thoroughly spoiled by the grid-wide Valentine hunts and gifts being so freely given in all the update groups, seemed one for as much good as it was for the bad. Firstly I was invited to become the editor of Glam SL Magazine, and had the honour of modelling in the magazine launch fashion show for Ghost, Muism, Leezu Baxter, Nicky Ree, Paper Couture, and Cachet. In my opinion this was one of the most well-produced shows I’ve modelled in. It was an opportunity to work with folks like Tamara Kirshner and Miko Omegamu, and the drive of everyone involved was nothing short of inspiring. I’m looking forward to what I can contribute to the magazine, and have already begun work on next month’s issue, which I promise you will be worth the wait.

The new home of Fleur, formerly Tete a Pied skins, opened with a Casino Royale-themed party next to Nicky Ree’s Tropical Orchid sim. CJ has done wonders with the build, which I recognised from the interior as being a beautiful re-creation of the world-famous Raffles Hotel in Singapore, and I only regret that I was late to the party. There was much banter and a roulette table, and the partygoers won gift cards for both Fleur and Nicky Ree. Of their new Shoujo skin line my favourite has to be the one inspired by Isabella from Paradise Kiss – you’ll know which if you’ve watched the series 🙂

As for Valentine’s gifts, you won’t want to miss out on some of the offerings from smaller boutiques that aren’t on any of the feeds. From the items that have been blogged elsewhere, I liked the gifts from Celestial Studios’ group, Veschi in the La Reina hunt, as well as the Alchemy dress (still available until the 14th at Alchemy).

Happy Mood is best known for its adorable sculpted pets (especially its cuddle rabbits) and its whimsically decorated shop in Osaka. I was fortunate enough to hear of their free Valentine’s Day gift available today, a beautifully sculpted hat with birds and a sprig of leaves, shown above. I think this is one of the best Valentine’s Day gifts out there, so be sure to stop by and get yourself a copy. Note that you have to find the item 😉

Kiki’s Closet, which has a number of very well-done goth accessories and chokers, is giving away a very detailed V-day belt. I would prefer this in black or white leather rather than brown, but it’s mod, so the textures can be changed. The belt is located on the boardwalk rather than the store itself.

Must Haves! Dragonfly Brooch by ICING

Posted by mannarosewood on February 2, 2008

icingdragonfly_001-copy.jpg

I just had to share. I love this gorgeous dragonfly brooch by Miko Omigamu of ICING. I saw it on a woman passing me by and I just to stop her and appreciate it. It’s absolutely an intricate charm and perfect for the coming spring season!

I own a piece or two if ICING clothing and adore the excellent quality but especially the consistent designs. Many floral patterns. One can never have enough floral patterns in their wardrobe. — This dragonfly brooch seems to be the only jewelry type item for sale in the shop and it conveniently comes with the Femme en Noir outfit. ICING store is currently having a 50% off Sale so the brooch with the dress is only 147L at the moment.

icingdragonfly_002.jpg

I love this. You will too!Buy it, rotate it, adore it! For someone who focuses on apparel this gem of a brooch is better than the quality of many jewelry-focused designers. Miko Omigamu, make more jewelry!

Virtual Credit Cards

Posted by mannarosewood on February 1, 2008

 soignemannaspeaks.jpg

manna rosewood says:

So these group of people started an amazing Second Life magazine called The Homme Mag. Absolutely wonderful! Beautifully written and visually pleasing. At-least it has all the aesthetics I appreciate. Honestly I’m more of a skimmer than a reader when it comes to fashion magaziness and blogs. I feel the visual presentation of fashion is more important than the wordy fu-fa! You know what I mean? — The Homme Mag caught my attention with astouding presentation and kept my interest with witty content. Check it out!

Anyway, the point is, after I finished flipping through The Homme Mag I noticed an ad for a virtual credit card company in SL. I also noticed a shop earlier this week using the program and the credit card purchase is cheaper than if you buy with lindens. Let me just say that after the whole GINKO incident last year I assume people would be more wise about their virtual decisions. I had friends who were “depositing money” in the GINKO bank and I’d ask them Why? For what? This is virtual!

And now a new trendy credit card program has risen with many stores participating. My personal advice: don’t use money you don’t have or own! Find a sugar daddy for goodness sake but don’t use or fall into these kind of virtual devil-deals that has trapped so many in first life. I understand that Second Life we value any closeness to First Life. We want to indulge in this new world but sometimes don’t want it to be too different than our original one. We want big breasts, or a six-pack and the height of Michael Jordan. Fine! That’s fine! But see credit in first life has a purpose. We build credit to show how responsible we are. We put money in first life banks because it’s safer than keeping that $10,000 in a shoebox under our beds.

Second Life is different. Our money is secure in neon green at the top of our screens. If you don’t have an account to convert real money to virtual money or you’re currently not making money in-world then don’t sign-up for a virtual credit card. It’s trouble, trouble, trouble!

On another note, there is good virtual plastic. Specifically the kind being used by BLAZE Fine Fashions and some other stores.

blazecard_001.jpg

The look is as chic as a credit card so it can tickle your fancy if you really want a virtual card. However it works like a Gift Card (Psychologically convince yourself it’s a credit card). You buy a certain amount and when it runs out you fill it up again (or the sugarpapa or sugarmama fills it up for you). This is the practical way to enjoy virtual credit as a virtual consumer without your strings getting mangled in virtual debt.
